If I Fall In Love With You

If I love you, I will be your partner.
If I love you, I will hold my own.
If I love you, I will surprise you, often.
If I love you, I will test you.
If I love you, I will tease you.
If I love you, I will want your approval.
If I love you, I will want your support.
If I love you, I will take risks.
If I love you, I will reveal the best and worst of who I am.
If I love you, I will laugh loudly and smile often.
If I love you, I will create things that are a reflection of that love.

If I fall in love with you…

I will trust you, and you will betray me.
I will be vulnerable, and you will do me harm.
I will be who I am, and you will tear at my sense of self.
I will feel stronger, and you will wear at my sense of worth.
I will feel that I belong, and you will abandon me.
I will need you to take my hand if troubles prevail, and you will leave me to founder.
I will open myself to you, and you will wrong me.
I will give you my heart, and you will break it.
For my heart was taught
Long ago
That I deserved only
Harm
In love.
If I fall in love with you…it is over.
